How much does it cost?
Dakota Curling runs three 8 week sessions per year: Fall, Winter, Spring. Most leagues charge $150 per 8 week session and you can choose to curl in one, two, or all three sessions. In addition, most leagues require you to join the club as a member, which costs $60 per year. Visit our membership page for more details on league structure and league dues.
What if I don’t know how to curl?
At the beginning of each session, Dakota Curling offers single-session Learn To Curl classes. If you are new to curling and NOT registered for an Instructional League, you should register for one of these classes. If you are unable to attend a Learn to Curl class before your league starts, register for the league anyway and just show up for your first game 30 minutes early. There are plenty of experienced curlers around who will show you the basics and get you curling right away. We recommend you take a Learn To Curl class the next time they are offered.
Dakota Curling also offers Instructional Leagues in which the first session is a Learn to Curl class and the remaining sessions are 20 minutes of instruction on a specific topic followed by a 6-end league game. Instructors are available on the ice during each game to give tips and advice in the context of game play. These leagues are an excellent opportunity to build skills and become competent at the game quickly.
Do I have to form a complete team in order to register?
No! You can register as an individual or a couple and we will attempt to place you on a team.
Do you have any open ice time I can just bring some friends by and check it out?
We do occasionally schedule open houses and open ice sessions where you can come by and try it out. Otherwise, we encourage you to visit during any scheduled league night or during a scheduled member practice session. During leagues, typically all sheets are occupied with scheduled games, but if any are open, you are welcome to give it a try. Our online calendar shows when we have leagues, practice sessions, and other events scheduled.
What equipment do I need to purchase in order to curl?
To curl, you need only a broom and a slider (which is a teflon surface that fits over the sole of one shoe.) The club will have this equipment available to borrow. We encourage you to purchase your own, but this is not required. If you are planning to purchase your own equipment, we recommend you purchase through Dakota Curling Supplies (similar name but no relation to our club). We typically have an equipment vendor set up a pro shop at the club twice per year, once in the fall and once in the spring.
How long does it take to play a game?
Games are made up of eight ends and usually take approximately 2 hours to play. Our game slots are limited strictly to 2 hours each and teams should play quickly in order to complete all 8 ends.
Can kids curl?
Yes, absolutely! Dakota Curling offers a youth program several times a year for kids ages 6-13. Activities and game play are adapted to the age and skill level of the kids during this program.
Students in grades 7-12 who are in the Lakeville School District may also be interested in playing for the Lakeville High School Curling team, which is an official school sport in the Lakeville District. The HS Curling Team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-5:30 pm and meets for skill development clinics and competition several weekends a month. For more information about the HS Curling Team, contact head coach Sandra McMakin.
Evening leagues at Dakota Curling are currently all adult leagues. Youth ages 15 and older may play in adult leagues as long as they are on a team with at least one other family member over 21. Teams made up of all juniors may register for adult leagues with the permission of the League Manager.
Can I come watch a game?
Dakota Curling runs leagues five nights a week October – May at our dedicated facility in historic downtown Lakeville. We have a large club room with windows overlooking ice from two sides, and an on-site bar. We welcome spectators for any game – check our online calendar for days and times when leagues are running.
Can I register as a sub?
If you’d like to play as a sub-only, you should join the club as a regular adult member at the rate of $60 per year. Adult members who are not part of a league are entitled to sub up to twelve times per year. If you wish to sub more than 12 times in a year, you should pay the regular league fee of $150 per 8 week session.
Non-members may only participate in league play two times before they are expected to join the club as members.
What if I want to register as a member of your club but do not want to play in a league this year?
Social memberships are available for $45 annually. Social memberships do not entitle you to register for a league, but do grant you USCA membership and voting privileges. Social members are also entitled to sub up to six games per year. Please visit our website for more details on the various membership categories available.
